Our prediction for this Euro 2024 match:
Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium will host Saturday’s EURO 2024 qualifier between Armenia and Turkey. The Armenians failed to win the previous seven games in all competitions, and, as a result, the bookies see them as underdogs in the Group D opener. Since the hosts continue life without Inter ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan, home win should not be considered.
The Turks, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Scotland and Czech Republic, and seeing that Stefan Kuntz can count on key players for Saturday’s encounter, we are tempted to put our money on the visitors. As always, a man to keep an eye on in the away team will be Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. In each of their only two previous meetings on the international stage Turkey defeated Armenia. Getafe striker Enes Unal is widely expected to lead the line for the visiting side.
Highlighted Player (Hakan Calhanoglu):
Hakan Calhanoglu is another one in the long line of Turkish footballers who were born in Germany, so it is hardly surprising he came to prominence thanks to his performances in Bundesliga. The attacking midfielder with great vision and very good goalscoring record started his professional career at Karlsruher, scoring impressive 17 goals in 50 league outings to earn a move to Bundesliga side Hamburg.
The spell at Imtech Arena was merely a stepping stone for bigger things as 11 goals in his debut top flight campaign persuaded Bayer Leverkusen to splash nearly €15 million on his services. That proved a very good investment as Calhanoglu continued the rich vein of form, and it is now a matter of time before he joins one of European powerhouses.
The midfield maestro had a bright start to his career in the Turkey national team, scoring 5 goals in first 16 caps, and chances are he will become a leader for Milli Takim in the foreseeable future.
Highlighted Team (Armenia):
Armenia footballers played for Soviet Union national football team until 1991, when the country declared independence. The Football Federation of Armenia was founded the following year and they quickly established relations with both FIFA (1992) and UEFA (1993).
Despite the fact that Manchester United ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan plays for the Armenia national football team, the Havakakan have yet to qualify for the finals of a major tournament. Mkhitaryan is undisputedly the team’s most famous footballer, but we should mention former Ajax striker Edgar Manucharyan as well, who is in the twighlight of his career. Armenia played their first international game against Moldova in October, 1992 and it has to be noted that they played out a goalless draw with the former Soviet republic.
The Armenians have slim chances of qualifying for the FIFA World cup 2018 finals, but they did well to beat Montenegro in the process. Armenia footballers wear red shirts and red shorts when playing at home ground (Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium), while the colour of their away kits is white.
