Slovakia
Austria and Slovakia face each other in a highly-anticipated friendly at Ernst Happel Stadion. The Austrians failed to spoil England’s party at Riverside Stadium, but their display in Wednesday’s warm-up game was anything but poor. Star attacker Marko Arnautovic missed the England game, but he should play some part in Sunday’s friendly. Stuttgart attacker Sasa Kalajdzic should keep his place up front, as well as Bayern Munchen ace David Alaba.
The Slovaks, on the other hand, played out a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria on Tuesday evening. Considering that the visitors are likely to go for a win in their last warm-up game before EURO 2020 as well, we are tempted to put our money on both teams to score. Experienced midfielder Marek Hamsik, who missed the Bulgaria friendly, is widely expected to return to Slovakia’s starting XI, as well as Inter defender Milan Skriniar.
Highlighted Player (David Alaba):
David Alaba started his youth career at SV Aspern and in 2002 he joined Austria Wien. Bayern Munich chiefs decided to sign him and he was promoted to the reserve team for the 2009/2010 campaign. He made 33 appearances for Bayern Munich II and he has been playing for the first team since 2010. At the age of 17 Alaba made his Champions League debut on 9 March, 2010 against Fiorentina.
The Austrian international is a full back, but he is capable of playing as a left midfielder as well. He represented Austria at the 2016 European Championship finals in France, but das Team failed to impress at the showpiece tournament, suffering elimination in the group stages. David Alaba won his fifth Bundesliga title with Bayern in the 2015/2016 season and he clinched the Champions League trophy with FCB in 2013.
Speaking of his individual honours, he was named Austrian Footballer of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Alaba was born in Wien on 24 June, 1992.
Highlighted Team (Slovakia):
Slovakia only appeared on the international stage in 1993 as Czechoslovakia fell apart, and the new national team have yet to record a result worth mention. Repre have only qualified for two major tournaments so far, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2016, but the current generation definitely seem capable of improving the team’s profile in years to come.
Slovakia currently have quite a few players plying their trade in some of Europe’s top sides, with Marek Hamsik, Martin Skrtel and Juraj Kucka clearly the leaders of the national team at the moment, but they do struggle in some areas and are not exactly world beaters just yet. Under Vladimir Weiss and Jan Kozak, Slovakia have become a tough not to crack, relying on rock-solid back line and swift counter-attacks, and they even gave Spain a tough time during the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Miroslav Karhan and Robert Vittek are the most capped player and top goalscorer respectively, with Robert Vittek another player worth the mention.
