Our prediction for this FA Cup match:
Southampton will look to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Leeds United when they take on Grimsby Town at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Saints are eager to go all the way in the FA Cup, and we are positive that they will go all guns blazing at the Mariners. Fit-again forward Theo Walcott is pushing for a start, whereas all Adams, Larios, Livramento, while January signing Mislav Orsic is a major doubt. In Adams’ absence, new recruit Paul Onuachu should keep his place in the starting XI.
Grimsby, on the other hand, played out a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient in their last League Two match. Paul Hirst’s troops, though, will have a much bigger fish to fry against Southampton, who will not have a better chance than this to get back on course. In their last meeting in the FA Cup, back in 1978 Southampton rolled over Grimsby Town 4-1, and we predict that history is going to repeat itself.
Highlighted Player (Theo Walcott):
Theo James Walcott is an English football player with roots from Jamaica born on 16th of March 1989 in London. Walcott started his football career for AFC Newbury and after scoring over 100 goals in his first season Southampton signed the young Walcott. After 2 seasons playing for the Saints scoring 4 goals in 21games Arsenal transferred Walcott to London for approximately 12 million GBP where he signed a 1 million GBP per year contract by the age of 17.
Walcott is known for being a very fast right-winger but is able to play as a striker as well. Walcott can be used very effectively to set up a counter attack but is the type of offensive player that is very dependant on the rest of the team.
Despite his young age Walcott made his debut for the English national team in May 2006 and played for over 40 games in the national team already. One of Walcott’s biggest weaknesses are his height (only 173cm) and the fact he get’s injured very quickly. Walcott won the FA Cup in 2013/2014 and 2014/15 with Arsenal and the Community Shield in 2015. During the World Cup in 2014 Walcott was injured.
Highlighted Team (Grimsby):
Founded back in 1878 as Grimsby Pelham, Grimsby Town are a professional football club that compete in League Two, the English fourth tier. Grimsby Town welcome their opponents at Blundell Park, the stadium which has the capacity of 9,027 people (all seated).
The Pilgrims are well known for their black jerseys with white stripes, whilst blue is the dominant colour of their away kit. Grimsby Town made it to the FA Trophy final on two occasions (2012/13, 2015/16), but they have yet to win the title in the competition. The likes of Hull City and Scunthorpe United are regarded as the club’s main rivals.
The Pilgrims registered their biggest win on September 4, 1925, as they crushed Tranmere Rovers 8-0. Speaking of their heaviest loss, Grimsby Town were beaten by Arsenal 9-1 on January 28, 1931. Pat Glover is sitting in top position in the club’s all-time goal-scoring chart with 180 league goals on his account.
